“Sweden experienced a positive migration flow over the past ten years. Many individuals are migrating to Sweden every year, and fewer individuals are emigrating. In 2021, nearly twice as many people immigrated to Sweden than people emigrating from it. This has been a major contributing factor for Sweden’s population growth, despite a declining fertility rate,” Statistisa explains.
The data further reveals that immigration in Sweden peaked at 90,631 in 2021, increasing by 9.5 per cent compared to 82,518 in the previous year. On the contrary, emigration rates remained almost unchanged, from 48,937 in 2020 and 48,284 in 2021, representing a minor drop of 1.3 per cent.
The immigration rates to Sweden have been on the rise in recent years, almost reaching 2016 levels when Europe was dealing with a migration crisis. During this so-called crisis, 163,005 immigrants reached Sweden, which is 60,000 more than the average of new arrivals recorded in a decade – 2011 and 2021.
