18,000 Foreign Nationals Set for Removal from Portugal
Portugal to Expel Over 18,000 Immigrants in Crackdown on Irregular Residency
In the coming months, Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) will notify approximately 18,000 immigrants of their obligation to leave the country due to their irregular legal status. These individuals either violated Portuguese immigration regulations or failed to comply with EU residency rules.
The decision stems from an extensive review of 110,000 foreign nationals currently residing in Portugal. According to government officials, the majority are likely in compliance with legal residency conditions. However, those found to be staying illegally will be formally notified, with the warning that failure to leave voluntarily will result in deportation.
Brazilian Nationals Among the Most Affected
Brazilians, who represent the largest group of foreign residents in Portugal—over 150,000 individuals—are expected to be significantly impacted by the new enforcement measures. While the government has not specified how many Brazilians will be affected, data indicates a rising trend in entry denials for Brazilian nationals.
According to the 2024 Annual Homeland Security Report, the number of Brazilians refused entry to Portugal increased dramatically from 179 in 2023 to 1,400 in 2024—a surge of over 700%. Common reasons for denial include failure to provide valid documentation, expired visas, or inadequate justification for entry.
A report by O Globo noted that in 2024, 1,700 individuals were barred from entering Portugal, with Brazilians making up the majority. This contrasts sharply with 2023, when only 373 people were refused entry, 47% of whom were Brazilian citizens.
Tighter Permit Rules from April 2025
In a related move, AIMA previously announced that beginning April 28, 2025, Portugal will implement stricter rules for granting and renewing residence permits. The updated regulations are part of broader efforts to strengthen immigration controls and improve the integrity of the residency system.
