42% of EU’s Youth Attain Tertiary Education, Eurostat Reveals
The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics 2 (NUTS 2) statistics reveal that out of the available data, 72 regions, constituting 30 per cent of all EU regions, met or surpassed the European Union’s established policy target of 45 per cent in this area, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
At the very top of the list, the Lithuanian capital region had an impressive 73.6 per cent of its young population with a tertiary level of education.
Closely following, 11 other regions, encompassing the capital areas of France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Luxembourg, and Denmark, boasted at least 60 per cent of young individuals with a tertiary level of education.
Two regions, Utrecht in the Netherlands at 67.6 per cent and País Vasco in northern Spain at 65.3 per cent, exhibited noteworthy tertiary education achievements, attributed to their emphasis on research, innovation, and high-tech manufacturing.
Notably, Northern and Western Ireland stood out alongside these regions, with an educational attainment rate surpassing 60 per cent.
On the contrary, at the opposite end of the spectrum, in 2022, there were 17 regions where fewer than 25 per cent of individuals, less than a quarter of all people, aged 25 to 34, had attained a tertiary level of education.
These regions encompassed seven out of the eight regions in Romania, with the capital region of Bucure?ti-Ilfov being the exception, three regions in Hungary, two regions in Bulgaria, a solitary region in Czechia, three regions in southern Italy, and the farthest region Guyane in France.
Within this group, some regions were characterised by their rural and isolated nature, offering limited opportunities for highly skilled employment.
In contrast, a select few of these regions were distinguished for their notable emphasis on vocational educational programmes, enabling students to enter the labour market through training schemes rather than relying on traditional academic qualifications.
Notably, the lowest rates of tertiary educational attainment at the regional level were observed in specific areas, including the Romanian regions of Sud-Muntenia at 16 per cent and Sud-Est at 17 per cent, as well as the Czech region of Severozápad at 18 per cent, and the Hungarian region of Észak-Magyarország at 18.2 per cent.
