Belize Seeks EU Support for Visa-Free Access
Belize Renews Efforts for Visa-Free Travel to the EU Amid Diplomatic Challenges
Belizean authorities continue to push for visa-free access to the Schengen Area, even as EU officials suggest the process remains unlikely in the near future.
Senator Eamon Courtenay, Belize’s Senator for Government Business, reaffirmed the country's commitment to securing a Schengen visa waiver for Belizean passport holders, stressing that the campaign for unrestricted travel across all Schengen member states remains active.
“The campaign continues for the Schengen visa waiver for all passports for the entire Schengen area,” Courtenay said.
Challenges Persist Amid Shifting EU Immigration Policies
Despite Belize’s strong interest in achieving a visa-free agreement, Senator Courtenay acknowledged the challenges, citing the current political and migration climate within EU member states, which has led to tighter border and immigration controls.
“It’s not very easy under the current conditions, even though Belize has ticked all the boxes. We believe it’s only a matter of time before the process moves forward,” he added.
Visa Waiver Would Benefit Students, Businesspeople, and Tourists
Courtenay highlighted the broad advantages of a Schengen visa waiver for Belizean citizens, particularly for:
- Students pursuing education in Europe
- Businesspeople engaged in EU trade and partnerships
- Tourists seeking to explore European destinations
“We export to Europe, we import from Europe, and our businesspeople need to travel freely to grow our trade relationships,” he explained.
Belize Calls for Reciprocity in Travel Access
Courtenay also raised the issue of reciprocal travel rights, noting that EU passport holders can enter Belize visa-free.
“Europeans can enter Belize without a visa, so we believe it’s only fair that Belizeans are granted the same opportunity to travel to the EU without needing a visa,” he said.
Belize Not a Risk for Irregular Migration
The Senator further argued that Belize poses no significant risk in terms of irregular migration. He pointed to the country’s previous visa-free arrangement with the United Kingdom during its time as an EU member, noting that no substantial migration issues arose during that period.
EU Cautious About Visa Liberalisation for Belize
However, EU Ambassador to Belize, Dr. Erja Askola, delivered a cautious response to Belize’s ongoing campaign. She emphasized that while the desire for a visa waiver is understood, the likelihood of approval in the coming years remains low due to the complex nature of the process and numerous political and technical requirements.
“The process is not realistic for the immediate future and depends on multiple factors,” Ambassador Askola stated.
Conclusion
While Belize remains committed to achieving visa-free access to the EU, the reality is that policy shifts within Europe, immigration control measures, and procedural complexities may delay progress. However, with ongoing diplomatic engagement and Belize’s compliance with eligibility standards, the goal remains firmly on the horizon.
