British Professionals May Soon Work More Freely in EU as Recognition Rules Change
EU Considers Recognising UK Qualifications to Improve Post-Brexit Mobility for Skilled Workers
Skilled workers from the UK are expected to benefit from a new proposal by the European Union aimed at strengthening EU-UK ties. The plan, reported by the Financial Times, is part of a broader EU single market strategy set to be published this month and will be discussed ahead of a summit on May 19.
The strategy includes measures to recognise UK professional qualifications, which would ease access to the EU labour market for British professionals. Although this proposal would significantly reduce professional barriers, UK citizens would still need to apply for work visas, depending on the rules of the individual EU countries where they intend to work.
Growing Momentum for Closer EU-UK Workforce Cooperation
Interest in improved work access to the EU has been mounting in the UK, especially following Brexit, which ended automatic freedom of movement for British nationals. UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has reportedly raised the issue of improving employment access for Brits in recent discussions with EU leaders.
Additionally, there is increasing support among British MPs for a youth mobility scheme that would allow UK and EU nationals aged 18 to 35 to live, work, and study in each other's countries for up to three years—without needing a long-term visa. Such a scheme would facilitate cultural exchange and professional experience for young adults on both sides.
Brexit's Impact on the UK Economy
According to a report published by the London Assembly, Brexit has had a severe economic impact on the UK, including its capital. The report reveals that London's economy has contracted by over €35 billion, with an estimated 290,000 job losses in the city alone. Nationwide, total job losses linked to Brexit are estimated at two million, with the financial services and construction sectors among the hardest hit.
