Bulgaria Becomes the Latest EU Country to Ban Entry of Cars With Russian Licence Plates
Announcing the ban that became effective yesterday, October 2, the head of the border police of Bulgaria, Anton Zlatanov, said that the measure would not only apply to personal cars but also to vehicles transporting goods, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
However, Zlatanow did not disclose how many cars with Russian licence plates are currently in the territory of Bulgaria. He just said that there are not many.
Just like the other countries that have already introduced an entry ban for Russian-registered cars, the Bulgarian authorities said that the decision of the country to impose such a measure follows the EU Commission’s clarifications on the existing problems.
On the other hand, while the countries who have introduced the ban have also said that exemptions will apply, the Bulgarian authorities did not make such a clarification.
Nonetheless, it is believed that vehicles that are owned by Bulgarian citizens or other EU citizens with permanent residence in Russia are not subject to the ban.
Moreover, it is also believed that those travelling for humanitarian reasons with a car registered in Russia will also not be subject to the ban when reaching Bulgaria.
The list of countries that have already introduced an entry ban for cars with Russian licence plates includes Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Norway, and others are also expected to join the list.
The entry ban for Russian-registered cars becomes effective today, October 3, in Norway. Announcing the measure, the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anniken Huitfeldt, said earlier this week that her country will continue to support Ukraine.
Norway further stressed that its decision also follows the clarification made by the Commission of the EU.
Similarly, Finland and Estonia said that their decision was taken in line with the Commission clarification, with the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margus Tsahkna, saying that Russians are not welcome in his country “to enjoy the privileges that freedom has to offer.”
On the other hand, Russia has highly criticised the EU countries for imposing a ban on Russia-registered cars.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia said that the EU is trying to keep the people-to-people contacts to a minimum and stressed that they view this move as a provocation and discrimination against Russians.
