Bulgarian Police Aim to Maintain & Improve Border Security
Border Police Director Anton Zlatanov stated that Bulgaria aims to sustain and enhance its border security performance. He noted a decrease in migratory pressure since the beginning of 2025 and confirmed that border checks with Schengen members Greece and Romania continue despite lifted routine controls. Zlatanov stressed the importance of preventing migration shifts from the Turkish-Bulgarian border to the Greek-Bulgarian border.
EU Representative Yordanka Chobanova praised Bulgaria’s commitment to border protection, reinforcing the country's role in securing the Schengen Area.
Bulgaria & Romania Fully Joined Schengen in 2025
Bulgaria and Romania officially became full Schengen members on January 1, 2025, after receiving approval from EU Ministers. While they had already entered Schengen by air and sea in March 2024, land border controls were only abolished in 2025.
A key requirement for Schengen accession was maintaining low irregular migration numbers. Data from Frontex indicated a 38% decline in irregular border crossings across EU countries in 2024, supporting Bulgaria’s case for full membership.
