Bulgaria Sets Goal for Visa-Free Travel to US by 2026
Bulgaria is making significant progress toward joining the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP), according to Caretaker Foreign Minister Ivan Kondov. His remarks, made in response to a parliamentary inquiry, highlight efforts to meet the program’s technical requirements, including reducing the tourist visa refusal rate for Bulgarian citizens to below 3%.
Improvements in Visa Refusal Rates
Data from the US Department of State shows that Bulgaria’s visa refusal rate dropped significantly to 6.02% in 2024, compared to 11.61% in 2023, marking the lowest rate ever recorded. Since 2006, Bulgaria’s refusal rate has fallen below 10% only twice, with 2024 being a milestone year.
Awareness Campaign to Reduce Visa Refusals
On December 15, 2024, Bulgaria launched a campaign to educate the public about US travel visas and reduce B-visa refusals. The campaign, under the slogan “You don’t need an Oscar to get a US visa,” featured 2021 Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova as its face.
Enhanced Border Security Partnership with the US
In December 2024, Bulgaria and the US signed an Enhanced Border Security Partnership to further align Bulgaria with the requirements of the Visa Waiver Program.
Benefits of Joining the US Visa Waiver Program
Once Bulgaria becomes part of the program, its citizens will be able to travel to the US visa-free for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days.
Separate Paths for Bulgaria and Romania
While Bulgaria and Romania became full Schengen Zone members on January 1, 2025, their progress toward the US Visa Waiver Program has diverged. Romania already achieved inclusion and will enjoy visa-free travel to the US starting March 31, 2025. Bulgarian officials remain committed to achieving a similar milestone by 2026.
