Bulgaria to Gain Support for Border Security with Türkiye Following Full Schengen Accession
Bulgaria and Romania’s Schengen Accession Nears Completion
Bulgaria and Romania are on the brink of achieving full Schengen Zone membership. Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, Director of the Bulgarian Border Police, expressed confidence that their accession will soon be finalized. However, he noted that the Bulgarian-Romanian border will remain under temporary border controls for six months, similar to measures in place in other Schengen countries. These controls will be based on risk assessments and are expected to be reviewed during the first five months of 2025 to decide when they can be lifted.
Strengthened Border Management at the Bulgarian-Turkish Border
Bulgaria is intensifying efforts to secure its border with Türkiye. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has significantly increased its presence, with 500 to 600 officers deployed to guard Bulgaria’s external EU border. This marks a substantial expansion, as Frontex plans to triple the number of officers stationed in the country. These measures are part of broader efforts to enhance border security amid ongoing concerns about irregular migration.
Overcoming Barriers to Full Schengen Membership
Concerns over irregular migration were among the key reasons Austria initially opposed the full accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Zone. As a result, both countries gained partial Schengen membership in 2024, limited to air and sea borders. However, during a meeting on November 22 involving interior ministers from Hungary, Austria, Romania, and Bulgaria, Austria decided to lift its veto. This decision clears the way for both Balkan countries to achieve full membership.
Anticipated Timeline for Full Membership
European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson confirmed that a vote on the full Schengen accession of Romania and Bulgaria is scheduled for the December 12-13 European Union Council for Justice and Home Affairs meeting. Johansson expressed optimism that land border controls for both countries could be lifted by January 2025, marking their complete integration into the EU’s visa-free travel area.
This milestone would not only strengthen Schengen’s principle of free movement but also enhance the EU’s collective border management capabilities, particularly in regions facing significant migration challenges.
