Cyprus and Romania Make Progress Toward Visa-Free Travel to the US
Cypriot citizens may soon enjoy visa-free travel to the United States as the country nears eligibility for the US Visa Waiver Program. One of the key requirements for inclusion is maintaining a low visa rejection rate, capped at three per cent. Cyprus has successfully met this criterion, with its current rejection rate standing at 2.16 per cent.
Cyprus Fulfills Key Conditions for US Visa Waiver Program
After years of effort, Cyprus has achieved significant milestones toward joining the Visa Waiver Program. Along with reducing visa rejection rates, Cyprus has improved cross-border cooperation with the US, particularly between law enforcement agencies. Additionally, the Cypriot Parliament has approved agreements for information exchange with the American government. These developments pave the way for Cypriot leader Christodoulidis and President Biden to sign the formal agreement before the Trump administration resumes office on January 20, 2025.
Romania to Join the US Visa Waiver Program in 2025
Romania has also made significant progress, with officials announcing that Romanian citizens will be eligible for visa-free travel to the US starting in 2025. Previously, one of the biggest hurdles was Romania’s visa rejection rate, which exceeded the three per cent threshold. In 2024, Romania successfully reduced this rate, enabling its inclusion in the program.
This milestone further elevates the strength of the Romanian passport, currently ranked 39th globally. According to the VisaGuide Passport Index, Romanian passport holders can travel visa-free to 111 countries, while a visa is required for 24 destinations.
