The progress of Bulgaria and Romania on implementing the Schengen acquis was reviewed during the Justice and Home Affairs meeting on October 10, 2024, led by Hungary, the current EU Presidency holder. While no vote was included in the agenda, discussions paved the way for a decision.
- December 13, 2024: The Committee of Permanent Representatives in the European Union (COREPER) will vote on the full membership of Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen Zone.
- If approved, land border controls are expected to be lifted by March 2025.
