EU Proposes Phased Rollout for Entry/Exit System to Streamline Borders
The European Commission has proposed a phased rollout of the Entry/Exit System (EES), a new digital border control mechanism, over six months. This progressive approach aims to facilitate a smoother transition for EU Member States and travelers.
Gradual Implementation and Reporting
Under the proposal, all Member States will begin operating the EES from day one but can progressively register third-country nationals crossing the borders. Initially, at least 10% of border crossings will be registered, gradually increasing to 100% by the end of the six-month period. Member States opting for this phased approach must report monthly progress to the European Commission and eu-LISA. Countries prepared for full implementation from day one are also permitted, provided the system is fully operational across all Member States by the six-month deadline.

The EES will replace manual passport stamping with a digital system to modernize border management and enhance Schengen Area security. This approach will:
