Foreign National Caught with Fake Schengen Visa While Attempting to Enter Greece
Nepali National Arrested at Mumbai Airport with Fake Schengen Visa While Attempting to Travel to Greece
A 26-year-old man from Nepal, Risman Chaudhary, was arrested by Sahar Police at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on May 13 for attempting to travel to Greece on a forged Schengen visa.
According to officials who spoke to The Free Press Journal, Chaudhary had intentions of settling in Europe and had allegedly obtained the fake visa through an agent in Nepal. His travel itinerary included a flight to Doha as a stopover before heading to Greece.
However, during routine immigration checks, Chaudhary’s passport and visa raised suspicion. The immigration officer noticed the visa lacked standard security features and the print quality appeared unusually low. The officer promptly reported the issue to a senior official, leading to a detailed inspection.
Authorities used a UV lamp to examine the documents, confirming the absence of essential security elements in both the passport and the visa. A subsequent inquiry with the foreign consulate revealed that the visa was not issued by any Greek authority, confirming it as a counterfeit.
Chaudhary has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Indian Passport Act, and further investigation is underway.
Spike in Fake Visa Attempts Among Labour-Class Migrants
This incident is part of a concerning trend. Sahar Police have recently registered 14 FIRs against 18 individuals in a single week for attempting to travel to Gulf countries using fake passports or visas. All were apprehended by alert immigration officials at the airport.
Sources indicate that most of the offenders belong to economically disadvantaged or labour-class backgrounds, driven by the hope of securing better job opportunities abroad. Some individuals were also suspected of having links to illegal networks.
Data reveals the following case distribution:
May 12: 2 cases
May 13: 2 cases (including Chaudhary's)
May 14: 3 cases
May 15: 5 cases
May 16 & 17: 1 case each
Rising Schengen Visa Fraud Cases Across Europe
Incidents involving fake Schengen visas are not isolated to India. In March 2025, Italian police uncovered a scam in which two suspects defrauded a victim of €16,000 by promising a counterfeit Schengen visa.
Authorities across Europe are increasingly cracking down on such operations, urging migrants to follow legal immigration pathways and avoid falling prey to fraudulent agents and scams.
