France Considering Restrictions on Work Visas for Algerians
Amid escalating diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria, the French government is considering imposing stricter rules on Algerians seeking work visas.
France Plans “Graduated Response” Against Algeria
At the beginning of this week, France’s Minister of Interior, Bruno Retailleau, announced that he would take a "graduated response" against Algeria after the Algerian authorities rejected a list of Algerian nationals facing expulsion from France.
When asked whether this response could include restricting work visas for Algerian nationals, French government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot Panosyan-Bouvet confirmed that such measures are under consideration. She stated that restricting work visas is part of the proposed “graduated response” and would likely affect Algerian work visa applicants. However, she did not clarify whether France plans to tighten the rules or reduce the number of work visas issued to Algerian nationals.
If France decides to restrict work visas, highly skilled and highly qualified Algerian workers are expected to be the most affected. However, other groups of Algerian workers may also face increased difficulty in securing visas.
France to End Visa-Free Travel for Algerian Diplomatic Passport Holders
Following the rejection of the expulsion list containing around 60 Algerian nationals, Minister Retailleau announced that France would suspend visa-free travel for Algerian diplomatic passport holders. French authorities have stated that the individuals on the list pose a security threat and requested Algeria’s cooperation in their repatriation.
However, the Algerian authorities declined to act on the list and invited France to follow the “usual diplomatic channels” for such matters.
This refusal has further strained diplomatic relations between the two countries. Minister Retailleau confirmed that France would respond by suspending the 2007 agreement that allowed Algerian diplomatic passport holders to enter France without a visa.
Public Support for Stricter Visa Policies
Algeria has previously refused to take back nationals who have received deportation orders from France, contributing to the growing diplomatic tension. This has also sparked frustration among French citizens.
According to a recent CSA poll, 84% of French citizens support the complete suspension of visas for Algerian nationals, believing that such measures would pressure Algeria into cooperating with France on repatriation issues.
France’s decision to suspend visa-free travel for Algerian diplomatic passport holders and the potential restriction of work visas reflect the country’s increasing frustration with Algeria's lack of cooperation on deportation matters.
