France Wants to Increase Airline Tickets Taxes and Lower Price of Train Tickets Instead
As it has been explained, by investing in train infrastructure and lowering prices, France wants to push more people to use trains to reach different destinations, whether inside or outside the country, instead of taking flights, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
Announcing the news on the country’s plans, the Minister of Transport of France, Clément Beaune, said that the higher taxes on flight tickets are expected to be officially implemented next year as part of the new budget.
In addition, Minister Beaune said that the country has already seen an upward trend in the use of train travel and stressed that this is the perfect time to make it more affordable.
He further said that the country expects to sell a record-breaking number of train tickets this summer.
“We will break a new record for tickets sold for train travel this summer. There is a desire to take the train, which we must support by lowering prices with the regions,” Minister Beaune said in an interview for RMC.
Moreover, Minister Beaune said that as part of this move, the authorities are also considering the possibility of introducing a tax on aircraft fuel as well. According to him, this tax is sustainably rational.
While the authorities have not yet given a specific date on when the prices for train transport will be officially lowered, Minister Beaune said that this will happen by next summer.
Minister Beaune further said that they especially want to reduce the prices for young people, suggesting that offers will be provided too to different groups of travellers.
“By next summer, we want to have a pass to travel, especially for young people, at a reduced and unlimited price,” Minister Beaune stated.
Earlier this year, Minister Beaune said that citizens of France pay less expensive train tickets than citizens of the other European Union neighbouring countries. However, by lowering the prices even more, the authorities want to push for more sustainable forms of transport.
France has already introduced discounted summer train fares in an attempt to help locals, as well as tourists, save money.
According to Euronews, more than 200,000 train tickets have been sold at the fixed price of €19. Moreover, it has been revealed that until August 27, a large number of express train services in Hauts-de-France are €1.
A set number of seats are available at the price of €1, and for this reason, everyone has been advised to purchase the tickets beforehand.
