Afghan Journalists Appeal Visa Denials in France with Support from Unions and NGOs
Afghan journalists denied long-term asylum visas by French authorities have filed an appeal with the Nantes administrative court. The judge reviewed the suspensive interim relief this week, with strong backing from the National Union of Journalists (SNJ) and the Human Rights League (LDH).
France’s Changing Stance on Afghan Journalists
French President Emmanuel Macron had pledged to protect Afghan journalists after the Taliban seized control of Kabul in the summer of 2021. While France initially welcomed dozens of journalists, this support appears to be waning. Antoine Chuzeville, SNJ's general secretary, highlighted that France is increasingly closing its doors to these vulnerable individuals. NGOs have also noted a decline in protection offers, contradicting Macron’s earlier promises.
Legal Battle for Asylum Protection
Lawyers representing the journalists argued their cases before the administrative court, which is expected to deliver a decision soon. Chuzeville emphasized the grave risks faced by Afghan journalists, with women facing persecution and men being imprisoned or threatened with death under Taliban rule.
Afghan Asylum Seekers Among the Largest in the EU
According to Eurostat data from 2023, Afghan nationals constituted the second-largest group of asylum seekers in the EU, with 100,935 applications—9.6% of total asylum requests. Germany received 50.8% of these applications, while France registered 16,860 Afghan asylum requests, making them the largest applicant group in the country. Between 2021 and 2023, 64 journalists were detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan, highlighting the ongoing threats faced by media professionals.
