Georgia is experiencing its 18th consecutive day of pro-EU protests following Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s announcement to suspend EU membership talks until the end of 2028.
Kobakhidze defended the decision, asserting that Georgia is a proud, self-respecting nation with a long history and rejecting the idea of EU integration being perceived as a "favour" from the bloc. The newly elected president of Georgia echoed Kobakhidze’s stance, emphasizing that mutual respect between Georgia and the EU is essential.
EU Considers Suspending Visa-Free Travel for Georgia
Amid rising tensions, EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, warned earlier this month that the European Union is exploring all options, including suspending visa-free travel for Georgian nationals.
This issue is set to be addressed at today’s Council of Foreign Affairs meeting, with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, acknowledging the growing concerns. Kallas noted that developments in Georgia are “not moving in the right direction” and revealed that several EU member states are pushing for the Commission to draft a formal proposal on limiting Georgia's visa-free travel to the Schengen Area.
