Germany Experiences Significant Rise in Indian Schengen Visa Applications in Early 2025
Germany Sees Surge in Schengen Visa Applications From India in Early 2025
Germany continues to be a top European destination for Indian travellers, with visa application numbers on the rise once again in 2025. According to Georg Enzweiler, Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Embassy in India, the first quarter of 2025 has already seen a significant spike in visa applications from Indian nationals.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference hosted by the German Embassy in India and the German National Tourist Board. However, Enzweiler did not disclose the approval rate of these applications.
Visa Access to Improve Through Digitalisation
Addressing the topic of visa accessibility, Enzweiler confirmed that Germany is working to fully digitalise the visa application process. This aims to streamline and improve the experience for Indian applicants. Importantly, he emphasized that the current visa rules will remain unchanged—Indian passport holders will continue to be eligible for multiple-entry visas with longer validity periods.
Tourism From India to Germany Grew Nearly 9% in 2024
Supporting this surge in visa demand is a continued rise in Indian tourism to Germany. Recent statistics show that the number of overnight stays by Indian visitors increased by 8.6% in 2024, reaching 897,841 overnight stays compared to 826,703 in 2023.
In addition to the growing number of visitors, Indians are also spending more time in Germany. The average length of stay rose from 9.3 nights in 2023 to 9.6 nights in 2024, reflecting a trend toward longer, more immersive travel experiences.
This extended stay duration naturally translates to increased tourist spending, benefiting the German economy and tourism sector.
Improved Connectivity Driving Growth
Industry experts attribute the growth in Indian arrivals in part to enhanced air connectivity between India and Germany. Direct flight routes and increased airline capacity have made travel between the two countries more convenient than ever.
Broader Schengen Travel Interest From India
While Germany remains a favorite, Indian travellers are increasingly exploring other Schengen member states as well. France, in particular, continues to register high volumes of visa applications and overnight stays from Indian tourists, underlining a broader trend of growing interest in European travel among Indian nationals.
