Germany Plans to Limit Admission Numbers of Refugees From Afghanistan
The German news magazine Der Spiegel said that the Ministry is planning only to admit a maximum of only 5,000 Afghans per year, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
According to the magazine, the German authorities are considering such a plan regarding the resettlement of Afghans to Germany in order to keep the programme operationally feasible.
Nonetheless, the idea of putting a cap on the number of nationals of Afghanistan admitted to Germany every year had not been welcomed, according to Info Migrants. The latter said that such an idea had been met with criticism. A member of the Bundestag for the Green Party said that organisations have assisted around 3,000 persons and reported tens of thousands of people still at risk.
The German Ministry of Interior revealed that over 18,800 Afghans had entered Germany since the Taliban takeover of power. However, Info Migrants explains that more than 10,000 persons who have been granted admission by the German authorities continue to remain in the country.
The acceptance rate has not fallen only in Germany but in other EU countries too. The European statistics provider, Eurostat, reveals that the number of acceptances in the EU decreased by five per cent in 2021 compared to 2020.
According to Eurostat, nationals of Afghanistan remained the second main citizenship of first-time asylum applications for the third year in a row. They accounted for 16 per cent of the EU total, or 83,520.
In addition, the same revealed that more than one in four persons applied for asylum in Germany. Germany accounted for more than a quarter of all first-time applicants in the EU.
“With 148 175 first-time asylum applicants registered in 2021, Germany accounted for over one-quarter of all first-time applicants in the EU (28 per cent),” the statement of Eurostat reads.
Other countries also registered high first-time asylum application rates in 2021. Germany was followed by France with 103,790 first-time asylum applicants or 19 per cent, Spain with 62,050 or 12 per cent, Italy with 43,900 or eight per cent, and Austria with 36,725 or seven per cent.
Previously, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reported that the German authorities are displacing existing Afghan refugees from accommodation centres in order to make way for those coming from Ukraine. A social activist from Afghanistan said that a social worker asked her and her family to clear out the place within the next 24 hours.
