Germany Tops EU in Granting Citizenship to Britons Post-Brexit
The highest number of Brits obtaining German citizenship was recorded in 2019, with 13,675 new German citizens, making up 45.82% of all Brits naturalized in the EU that year.
France Became the Top EU Citizenship Issuer After Brexit
Following the UK's formal departure from the EU on January 31, 2020, a shift occurred in EU citizenship applications. While Germany remained the top issuer in 2020, numbers dropped significantly from 13,675 in 2019 to 4,310 in 2020—a decline of 68.48%. The trend continued, with only 2,345 Brits gaining German citizenship in 2021.
Meanwhile, France overtook Germany as the top EU citizenship issuer to Brits, granting 3,693 citizenships in 2021. France has maintained this position since then, naturalizing 1,884 Brits in 2023, followed by Ireland with 1,009.
Few Brits Gained Citizenship in the Baltic States
According to Maarten Vink, Chair in Citizenship Studies at the European University Institute, the rise in naturalizations among Brits is a direct result of Brexit. However, the number of Brits obtaining citizenship in Estonia and Lithuania remained extremely low—only four and six cases, respectively, between 2016 and 2023.
Conversely, smaller EU nations saw relatively high numbers, with Cyprus granting citizenship to 4,291 Brits, followed by Denmark (2,277), Luxembourg (1,984), Malta (1,385), Portugal (1,041), and Greece (794) over the same period.
