Greece’s Visa-On-Arrival Scheme for Turkish Nationals Extended Until 2026
The European Commission has praised the success of Greece’s visa-on-arrival program for Turkish nationals, highlighting its positive impact on strengthening ties between Greece and Türkiye.
Visa-On-Arrival Scheme Allows Short-Term Stays
- The scheme permits Turkish nationals to stay between 1 to 7 days on 12 Greek islands without applying for a Schengen visa in advance.
- The Greek islands included in the program are:
- Kalymnos, Kastellorizo, Kos, Lesbos, Leros, Limnos, Rhodes, Samos, Symi, Chios, Patmos, and Samothrace.
- The program was introduced on April 1, 2024 following an agreement between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
High Demand for Express Visas
- Over 100,000 express visas were issued to Turkish tourists between April 1, 2024 and November 2024.
- Approximately 400,000 Turkish tourists visited Greek islands during the peak summer season alone.
- The General Police Directorate of the North Aegean reported that in just three islands of the Northeast Aegean, 54,373 visas were issued by the end of August 2024.
Over 1 Million Turkish Visitors in 2024
- A total of 1,153,727 Turkish tourists travelled to the Greek islands in 2024 on 8,629 ferry routes — a 93% increase compared to 2023.
- The surge in Turkish visitors has boosted Greece's tourism sector, with local media in Türkiye stating, “We made Greece rich,” referencing the increase in tourism revenue from Turkish visitors.
Greek authorities have welcomed the program’s success and confirmed that it will remain in place until April 2026.
