Greece to Significantly Raise Tourist Taxes in 2025 to Boost Revenue and Improve Infrastructure
Starting in 2025, tourists visiting Greece will face higher daily taxes. The current daily tax of €0.5 will increase to €2, with a further rise to €8 during the high season (April to October). High-rated hotel stays will incur additional charges, with taxes reaching up to €15, while other accommodations will have lower rates.
New Taxes for Cruise Passengers
Greece’s booming cruise tourism, expected to surpass eight million visitors in 2025 with a 20% annual increase, will also see higher taxes. Cruise passengers visiting Santorini or Mykonos will pay €20 per day, while those visiting other destinations like Athens and Crete will pay €5.
The increase in cruise taxes follows concerns about capacity on islands like Mykonos, which accommodates up to 20,000 daily cruise passengers despite a resident population of just 12,000. Similarly, Santorini received up to 17,000 visitors on its busiest days in 2023, far exceeding its population of 15,500.
Revenues to Fund Tourism Infrastructure and Disaster Mitigation
The Greek government plans to allocate the revenue generated from these increased taxes toward improving tourism infrastructure and addressing natural disaster risks, such as floods and wildfires. These measures aim to reduce the impact of such events while supporting the tourism industry.
