Guyana Ambassador to EU Advocates for Schengen Visa Exemption
Guyana’s Ambassador to Belgium and the EU, Sasnarine Singh, has urged EU authorities to grant visa-free travel to Guyanese nationals during a meeting hosted by EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola aimed at strengthening EU-Latin America relations.
Ongoing Efforts for a Visa-Free Agreement
While Singh addressed the Schengen visa exemption, it remains unclear whether EU officials responded to the request. This is not the first time Guyana’s government has pushed for visa facilitation. President Irfaan Ali previously criticized the strict visa requirements imposed on Guyanese nationals and called for relaxed conditions.
To secure visa-free travel, Guyana must meet EU criteria, and the country has been making strides in this direction. Recently, Guyana’s Ministry of Interior introduced a ten-year e-passport, a key step toward improving its global mobility ranking.
Schengen Visa Applications Now Available in Guyana
Since October 2024, Guyanese passport holders can now apply for Schengen visas in Georgetown, eliminating the previous requirement to travel to Suriname for visa processing—reducing costs and easing the application process.
France Strengthens Presence in Guyana
In 2025, France will open an embassy in Guyana, a move announced nearly a year ago by the French Ministry for European and Foreign Affairs. The embassy aims to:
- Enhance bilateral relations between France and Guyana
- Simplify Schengen visa applications for Guyanese nationals
Guyana continues to push for greater travel freedom, with diplomatic efforts focusing on securing an EU visa waiver in the near future.
