Hungary and Romania to Increase Number of Checkpoints at Common Borders to 14
According to local media, this figure could increase to 16 by 2030 with the upcoming completion of several highway projects. In addition, the prospect of Romania’s accession to the Schengen area could bring ten more border crossing points for immediate use, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reports.
“Consequently, the coming years will be about major road constructions on the border between the two countries. At the moment, the construction of two highways is underway; one of them will be inaugurated in 2025, and the other in 2030,” Minister Szijjarto pointed out in this regard.
Szijjarto further said they will open two new border crossing points, including one in Beba Veçe, which will operate for no more than two years. Under the agreement, they are also reconstructing the bridge over the Mures River, which was destroyed in 1940.
He emphasised that with the introduction of these two new border crossing points, the total number will increase from 12 to 14. Also, completing the two highway crossing points previously mentioned, set to be handed over or inaugurated in 2025 and 2030, will bring the total to 16 crossing points.
Moreover, he stated that this number could increase immediately to 26, mainly due to the existence of ten additional connections between the two countries once Romania becomes a full Schengen Member. However, these additional connections are currently limited to once a week because Romania still needs to join the Schengen Agreement.
The Minister of Transport also explained the importance of the second signed memorandum, emphasising, in particular, the importance of the bridge over the Mures River in Cenad.
Grindeanu said that this bridge has a symbolic value and addresses an absolute necessity in the region, promoting the expanded cooperation between the two countries. At the same time, it has economic importance for Timis County, prompting him to assert that the Timis County Council should actively advance this project.
Minister Grindeanu further pointed out that the project enjoys broad support from local, regional, and central public authorities. The establishment of specific project milestones, scheduled for completion by the end of September, was also announced.
