Hungary Lifts Visa Requirements for Pakistani Diplomatic Passport Holders
Hungary Waives Visa Requirement for Pakistani Diplomatic Passport Holders Amid Strengthened Bilateral Ties
Hungary has officially signed an agreement to waive visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders from Pakistan, marking a significant step in enhancing bilateral relations. The announcement was made following a meeting between Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, Arab News reports.
Celebrating 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations
Szijjártó’s visit to Islamabad commemorates 60 years of diplomatic ties between Hungary and Pakistan. During this high-level meeting, both countries signed two Memoranda of Understanding in the fields of culture and archaeology, furthering their commitment to deeper cooperation in key sectors.
The visa waiver agreement was warmly welcomed by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who highlighted it as a positive development for enhancing diplomatic exchanges and fostering stronger ties with European nations.
Pakistan’s Push for European Investment
Szijjártó’s visit also aligns with Pakistan’s broader efforts to attract investment from European countries, particularly in trade, energy, and tourism sectors. As Pakistan looks to achieve sustainable economic growth, officials have increasingly focused on building international partnerships through such bilateral agreements.
Addressing Regional Security and Refugee Challenges
During his visit, the Hungarian minister also discussed regional security issues, particularly concerning Afghan refugees and the threat of terrorism.
Szijjártó emphasized that both Hungary and Pakistan face serious security concerns in their respective regions. He warned of the potential for renewed irregular migration waves to Europe, stemming from terrorist threats originating in Afghanistan.
He praised Pakistan’s efforts in managing security challenges, acknowledging their important role in contributing to European and global security.
Hungary’s Constitutional Amendment on National Security
In line with its commitment to safeguarding national interests, Hungary recently adopted its 15th constitutional amendment, which includes provisions that:
- Restrict rights for individuals posing a threat to public or national security
- Allow for the revocation of citizenship from dual nationals who also hold a non-EU passport, if deemed a security risk
Additionally, the amendment legally defines gender strictly as male or female, reflecting recent shifts in Hungarian domestic policy.
