Hungary to Reopen Embassy in Syria’s Capital, Damascus
Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Péter Szijjártó, has announced the reopening of the Hungarian embassy in Damascus, Syria. According to Minister Szijjártó, reopening the embassy will enable Hungary to gain credible, first-hand information about developments in Syria, represent its political stance, and support the interests of Hungarian citizens when needed.
Minister Szijjártó emphasized Hungary's commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East and its dedication to providing humanitarian aid, particularly to Christian communities in the region. Notably, Hungary's ambassador to Syria was the first Western diplomat to meet leaders of the two largest Christian denominations in the country, reflecting Hungary's focus on supporting these communities.
EU’s Plans to Reopen Delegation in Syria
The European Union recently expressed its intention to reopen its delegation in Syria. Kaja Kallas, the EU head of diplomacy, highlighted the importance of re-establishing the EU's presence in Syria during a European Parliament debate. She stressed that the EU must avoid leaving a "vacuum" in the region and foster stronger bilateral relations with Syria.
Kallas also called for the removal of Russian military bases from Syria, arguing that they have not contributed to the country's well-being but instead supported the former Assad regime. These developments follow the end of Assad's rule, which has prompted several EU countries, including Germany, Austria, Sweden, and others, to pause processing asylum applications from Syrian nationals. Authorities in these countries are closely monitoring the security situation in Syria before resuming the processing of such applications.
