Decline in British Nationals Moving to France
While Americans are increasingly relocating to France, the number of Brits seeking residence permits has dropped by 10% compared to the previous year.
- 2024: 8,400 first-time residency cards issued
- 2023: 9,339 permits issued
- 2022: 11,174 permits issued (24% higher than 2024)
The sharp decline in Brits moving to France is attributed to Brexit, which significantly impacted their residency rights. Data shows a dramatic drop in residence permits issued to Britons, from 99,954 in 2021 to only 11,000 in 2022.
2024 marks the third consecutive year of decline, with British nationals failing to appear in the top ten nationalities granted French residence permits.
Increase in Residency Permit Renewals & Family Reunification Trends
- 879,790 renewals were recorded in 2024, a considerable increase.
- 325,000 renewals (37%) were for family reunification, though this number dropped by 2.5% from 2023.

While less than 5,000 British nationals renewed their residence permits in 2024, this marked a 47% increase compared to 2023, rising from 3,400 to 5,000.
Changes in Visa Issuance Trends
- Long-stay visas declined by 2.8% in 2024 compared to 2023.
- Visitor visas increased slightly, from 33,558 to 33,700.
Overall, France continues to see a rising demand for residence permits, particularly among Americans, while Brexit's impact remains evident in the declining British residency numbers.
