Ireland Asked to Justify End of Visa-Free Travel for Eswatini
The government of Eswatini is seeking clarification from Ireland regarding the recent imposition of visa requirements on Eswatini nationals. While Irish authorities have yet to release an official statement, local media reports suggest the decision was driven by a rise in irregular migration.
Ireland Introduces Visa Requirements for Eswatini, Lesotho & Nauru
As of March 10, 2025, Ireland has ended visa-free travel for passport holders of Eswatini, Lesotho, and Nauru. This means that nationals from these countries must now obtain a visa for any form of travel to Ireland, including transit.
Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, justified the decision by stating that it aligns Ireland’s immigration policies with those of neighboring countries. He emphasized that multiple factors were considered to maintain fairness and efficiency in travel regulations.
Transitional Measures for Certain Travelers
The Irish authorities have introduced temporary exceptions for specific groups. Nationals of Eswatini, Lesotho, and Nauru who booked travel before March 10 and arrive in Ireland by March 31, 2025, may still enter without a visa if they qualify under the exemption list.
Eligible travelers include those starting university studies, individuals with Employment Permits, business travelers, those attending significant family events, and those visiting Ireland for urgent medical reasons related to family members.
It remains to be seen whether Ireland will provide further clarification on the policy change and how it will impact travel between the affected countries.
