Ireland Grants Over 30,000 Work Permits in 2024, Agriculture Among Key Sectors
The Irish Department of Trade and Employment (DETE) has reported issuing a total of 36,402 work permits between January and November 2024. Of these, 3,400 permits (9.4%) were allocated to the agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors, which remain essential industries in Ireland.
The highest number of agricultural permits was issued in February (591), while November recorded the lowest (141).
Breakdown of Employment Permits by Sector
The majority of work permits in 2024 were granted in the health and social work sectors, totaling 11,694 permits or 32.1% of all approvals. Information and communication activities followed, accounting for 17% of the total.
Salary Increases in Agriculture and Horticulture
As announced last year, the annual salaries for workers in meat processing and horticulture will increase from €30,000 to €32,000 starting January 2025, reflecting Ireland's commitment to improving worker welfare.
Top Nationalities Granted Work Permits in Ireland
According to DETE, most work permits were issued to nationals from Asian, African, and South American countries. The top 10 nationalities granted employment permits in 2024 were:
- Indians: 12,498 permits (31.4% of total permits), making them the largest group.
- Brazilians: 4,320 permits, though rejection rates for this group were slightly higher at 12% (578 rejections).
- Filipinos: 3,760 permits, with a 94% approval rate.
- Chinese: 1,760 permits.
- Pakistanis: 1,600 permits.
- South Africans: 1,509 permits.
- Americans: 1,031 permits.
- Zimbabweans: 908 permits.
- Nigerians: 909 permits.
- Malaysians: 620 permits.
