Corruption Scandal at Italian Embassy in Dhaka: €15,000 for a Work Visa
Bangladeshi citizens have reportedly paid between €7,000 and €15,000 to obtain work visas for Italy through a widespread corruption network involving officials at the Italian Embassy in Dhaka.
According to local media and La Repubblica, representatives from Bangladeshi community groups in Italy bribed embassy officials using luxury gifts such as Rolex watches, smartphones, TVs, cars, Dubai trips, and safari holidays, in exchange for the issuance of visas through false job offers and fake documentation.
The scheme was exposed by the Rome prosecutor’s office, which has named four suspects, including two embassy officials accused of facilitating irregular migration in exchange for money.
The plot was allegedly coordinated by Islam Nazrul, a 60-year-old Bangladeshi businessman and leader of a community association in Rome.
In a more audacious move, the group also attempted—unsuccessfully—to bribe Italian MP Andrea Di Giuseppe from the Brothers of Italy party with €2 million, which he later reported.
The lawyers of the Bangladeshi suspects, Salvatore Sciullo and Floriano Polito, claimed that their clients acted out of “solidarity toward compatriots in difficulty.” They expressed hope that the trial would clarify the facts and restore the truth.
