Italy Prepares for Increased Schengen Visa Applications from Kazakhstanis
In November 2024, VFS Global opened five new visa centers in Kazakhstan—in Astana, Almaty, Atyrau, Shymkent, and Ust-Kamenogorsk—as part of Italy’s efforts to boost tourism. Although waiting and processing times have not been officially disclosed, Kazakh travelers can now access appointments more easily due to the increased number of centers.
Italy: A Top Destination for Kazakhstanis
Italy remains a highly sought-after destination for Kazakh tourists due to its rich cultural heritage, historic landmarks, cuisine, and beaches. Popular cities like Rome, Milan, and Venice attract most visitors from Kazakhstan. To meet the growing demand, Italy and Kazakhstan have strengthened air connectivity through a partnership between Neos Air and Air Astana, improving direct flights between the two countries.
Kazakhstan Nationals Filed Over 159,000 Schengen Visa Applications in 2023
According to AtoZSerwisPlus statistics, Kazakhstan nationals filed 159,072 Schengen visa applications in 2023, with 143,970 receiving approval. Italy received the highest number of applications from Kazakhstanis, recording 19,756 applications and issuing 18,622 visas. Spain (19,674) and France (12,096) followed closely, making the top three most preferred Schengen countries for Kazakh travelers.
Efforts are underway to further simplify travel between Kazakhstan and the EU. The EU and Kazakhstan are negotiating a visa liberalization agreement. In January, EU Ambassador Aleška Simkić confirmed that Kazakhstan is a priority on the EU Commission’s agenda and is advocating for a visa-free regime to be implemented soon.
