Kazakhstan Advocates for Swift Schengen Visa Facilitation Talks with EU
The European Union Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Aleška Simkić, and the Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister, Roman Vassilenko, held a meeting on December 23 to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two parties.
Kazakhstan Pushes for Visa Facilitation
During the meeting, Vassilenko emphasized the importance of promptly starting Schengen visa facilitation negotiations, highlighting the mutual benefits for Kazakhstan and the EU. The facilitation process aims to simplify visa rules and strengthen people-to-people ties while boosting business relations.
Vassilenko also noted Kazakhstan’s preparation to sign the Horizontal Aviation Agreement with the EU, which will further enhance connectivity and collaboration.
Strengthened Cooperation and Progress
Both parties agreed to increase cooperation across various sectors and welcomed the progress made on existing agreements between Kazakhstan and the EU.
EU’s Readiness for Negotiations
The EU confirmed its readiness to begin preparations for visa facilitation negotiations during a meeting in October 2024. Discussions also included the Readmission Agreement, which focuses on the repatriation of nationals staying irregularly in the EU.
Initial talks on simplifying the Schengen visa application process were launched in June 2024, but further preparations are required before the negotiations progress.
Kazakhstan’s Requests in Visa Negotiations
Kazakhstan has outlined several key requests for the EU during these talks:
- Lower Visa Fees: Requesting a reduction of the Schengen visa application fee, which increased from €80 to €90 in June 2024.
- Longer Visa Validity: Advocating for visas with extended validity periods for Kazakh citizens.
- Faster Processing Times: Urging the EU to speed up visa application processing for Kazakh nationals.
In return, Kazakhstan has assured the EU of its commitment to:
- Prevent irregular migration, with measures in place to ensure tourists return to Kazakhstan after their EU visits.
- Cooperate in the readmission of nationals who overstay or lack the required documentation.
