Luxembourg Urges End to Border Controls by France and Germany
Luxembourg lawmakers have called for an end to internal Schengen border controls imposed by France and Germany, stressing the importance of free movement within the Schengen Area. During a parliamentary discussion, LSAP politician Yves Cruchten emphasized that internal border controls should remain an exceptional measure, not the norm. He expressed concerns over the recent border controls, urging they be treated as a last resort.
Germany introduced internal border checks at its land borders on September 16, describing them as temporary and set to last for six months. Meanwhile, France reinstated its border controls on November 1, which are expected to remain in place until April 30, 2025. Both countries justified the measures as necessary to address national security concerns and combat irregular migration.
Luxembourg lawmakers, however, argued that irregular migration cannot be used as an excuse for frequent internal border checks. Deputy Stéphanie Weydert supported this stance, calling for strengthened external Schengen borders and criticizing the impact of the checks on cross-border workers, who are essential to Luxembourg’s economy.
Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the government’s opposition to internal border controls. He advocated for enhancing external border security instead.
Luxembourg’s criticism comes amid similar measures by other Schengen countries. Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Norway, Austria, and Slovenia currently enforce internal border controls. Recently, Austria extended its controls with Slovenia and Hungary until May 2025, citing irregular migration concerns. Norway also prolonged its border checks until December 1.
These developments reflect ongoing debates about balancing Schengen's principles of free movement with security and migration management.
