Thailand Tops Visa Applications to Norway in 2024 with High Approval Rates
In 2024, Thai nationals ranked among the top visa applicants to Norway, filing a total of 14,259 Schengen visa applications, according to Per-Jan Brekke, Team Leader for Press and Public Relations at UDI.
Visa applicants from four key countries—Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam—accounted for 88 per cent of all visas issued by Norwegian authorities in 2024, with a total of 26,454 granted visas.
95% Approval Rate for Thai Applicants
Thai nationals had one of the highest visa approval rates, with 13,546 applications approved out of 14,259, translating to a 95% success rate. In contrast, only 713 applications were rejected.
During the pandemic, the rejection rate for Norwegian Schengen visas issued in Bangkok was significantly higher, with a seven per cent refusal rate in 2023. However, in 2024, the refusal rate dropped to five per cent, aligning with pre-pandemic levels.

- Indonesians: 98%
- South Africans: 97%
- Fijians: 96%
Could Thailand Be Next for Schengen Visa Liberalisation?
Following Malaysia’s successful visa liberalisation agreement with the Schengen Area, Thailand could be the next candidate for visa-free travel. In 2024, France initiated discussions on the possibility of visa-free travel for Thai nationals. Finland has also shown interest in supporting Thailand on its journey toward Schengen visa liberalisation.
Recently, during a meeting in Bangkok, Thailand’s Director-General of European Affairs, Krongkanit Rakcharoen, called on Finland to back Thailand’s efforts in securing a visa-free travel agreement with the EU.
High Demand for Schengen Visas Among Thai Nationals
According to SchengenVisaInfo, Thailand filed 270,504 Schengen visa applications in 2023, making it one of the top countries of origin for such requests. Most of these applications were submitted to:
- Switzerland
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Norway
