Novak Djokovic Set to Obtain Greek Residency via Golden Visa Program
Novak Djokovic Set to Move to Greece Under Golden Visa Program
Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic is reportedly preparing to relocate to Greece in September 2025, accompanied by his wife Jelena, their son Stefan, and daughter Tara, according to a report from Greek news outlet Proto Thema.
Djokovic is said to have chosen Athens as his new residence, fueling speculation after he recently met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis—a move many interpret as a sign of his deepening ties with the Hellenic Republic.
A Longstanding Connection with Greece
Djokovic’s affection for Greece isn’t new. His bond with the country began in 2009, during an Australian Open match against Cypriot player Marcos Baghdatis. Reflecting on the experience, Djokovic once said:
“I’ve never experienced anything like this. Rival fans chanting my name together. But we’re Orthodox brothers.”
His admiration for Greece deepened over time, particularly visible during his matches against Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas. After defeating Tsitsipas in the 2023 Australian Open final, Djokovic paid tribute to their shared background:
“Greece and Serbia are two relatively small countries without a strong tennis tradition… Stefanos and I are proof that anything is possible, no matter where you come from.”
From Spain to Greece: A New Chapter
According to Hello Magazine, the 38-year-old tennis icon is planning to leave his luxurious Marbella mansion, valued at approximately €10.75 million ($11.53 million), to settle in Greece. Reports suggest the move may also be influenced by political tensions in Serbia. Djokovic had publicly expressed his support for student protests against Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić through a post on X (formerly Twitter) in 2023.
Golden Visa Program Draws Record Interest
Djokovic is expected to gain Greek residency through the Golden Visa program, which offers residency permits in exchange for property investments or other qualifying contributions. The program continues to attract high-net-worth individuals from around the world.
In 2024, Greece registered 9,289 Golden Visa applications, marking a 10% increase compared to the previous year. According to IMI Daily, the program has experienced a 25% growth rate from 2018 to 2024, solidifying its status as one of Europe’s most popular investment migration schemes.
