Poland Arrests Three Colombians for Fake Student Residence Permit Scheme
Polish authorities have detained three Colombian nationals who falsely claimed to be students while applying for temporary residence permits. According to submitted documents, the applicants were first-year students in administration studies for the 2024/2025 academic year. However, it was later revealed that the university in question was not authorized to admit foreign students.
Detained Individuals Fined €2,400 Each
The three men were charged under Article 13 § 1 in connection with Article 272 of the Polish Penal Code for attempting to obtain false certification through deception. They admitted guilt and voluntarily surrendered. As a result, the District Prosecutor fined each detainee €2,400.
Poland’s Border Guard reminded that since 2019, universities must be approved by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration to admit foreign students.

A recent SW Research survey found that 62% of Poles support reintroducing internal border controls within the EU to curb immigration. Meanwhile, 23% opposed the idea, and 15% had no opinion. The question posed was: “Should the EU reintroduce border controls between Schengen Area countries to reduce migration?”
Support for tighter borders aligns with Poland’s stance on EU migration policies. Frontex data shows that Poland’s eastern land borders, particularly with Ukraine, have experienced a significant number of irregular crossings. In January 2025, 412 illegal border crossings were recorded, with 410 coming from Ukraine and one each from Russia and Romania. Poland has also opposed the EU migration pact if it mandates the relocation of migrants.
