The Portuguese Embassy in Guinea-Bissau has reported a significant rise in study visa applications, reflecting a growing interest among Guinean students in pursuing higher education in Portugal.
Increase in Study Visas Granted
In 2024, Portuguese authorities approved 4,966 study visa applications from Guinean students, marking a 48% increase from the 3,356 visas granted in the 2023/2024 academic year, according to Publico.
However, Guinean students, along with applicants from other Portuguese-speaking countries such as Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Angola, and Timor-Leste, have faced visa processing delays.
CPLP Nationals Represent Nearly Half of Portugal’s Visa Applications
Portugal is a key destination for nationals from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), a bloc of nine countries focused on fostering cooperation, including in the labor market.
In 2023, CPLP nationals submitted 97,532 visa applications, accounting for 46.9% of the 207,654 total applications received by Portugal.
The breakdown of applications from CPLP countries in 2023:
- Angola – 54,852 applications (26.4% of total)
- Cape Verde – 16,725 applications (8%)
- Mozambique – 13,383 applications (6.4%)
- São Tomé and Príncipe – 9,582 applications (4.6%)
- Guinea-Bissau – 2,508 applications (1.2%)
