Schengen Accession in Sight as Cyprus Advances Integration Efforts
Cyprus Advances Significantly Toward Schengen Accession, Says Foreign Minister
Cyprus is making substantial progress on its path to joining the Schengen Area, with recent developments earning positive feedback from the European Commission, according to Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos.
Speaking to Cyprus Mail on April 23, Kombos emphasized that Schengen accession remains a top political priority for the current administration. "The results show real progress on the recommendations," he noted, adding that the government will "continue the hard work without many words, keeping a low profile for many different reasons."
Strategic Investments in Border Security and Digital Infrastructure
As part of its preparation, Cyprus has allocated significant resources to meet Schengen requirements, including:
- €6.77 million for the construction of new reception and pre-departure centres in the Limni area
- €30 million for upgrading sea border surveillance capabilities
- €9.9 million to enhance digital systems, including the Schengen Information System (SIS)
These investments are part of broader efforts to ensure compliance with Schengen standards in areas such as border management, security, and information sharing.
European Commission Monitoring Progress
European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner recently confirmed that the European Commission is closely monitoring Cyprus’s progress in fulfilling the technical and operational criteria for Schengen membership.
His remarks came shortly after the release of the Commission’s fourth State of Schengen Report, which assesses the past year’s developments and outlines key priorities for the next phase of integration. Brunner described Cyprus’s progress as "encouraging."
Political Commitment at the Highest Level
Earlier this year, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides reiterated the government’s goal of resolving all technical issues required for Schengen accession by the end of 2025. Cyprus, a European Union member since 2004, is currently outside the Schengen Zone.
The President noted that joining Schengen would be a major boost for tourism, which is a critical pillar of the country’s economy.
