Schengen Visa Applications to Luxembourg Hit All-Time High in 2024
Luxembourg Sees Record 173% Surge in Schengen Visa Applications in 2024
Luxembourg registered a record-breaking 30,677 Schengen visa applications in 2024, marking a 173% increase compared to 2023, when only 11,227 applications were received. This sharp rise highlights Luxembourg's growing appeal as a destination for travel, study, work, and family reunification.
Ministry Attributes Growth to Luxembourg’s Rising Global Appeal
In response to the figures, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs stated that the significant growth reflects the country’s increasing popularity among international visitors and professionals. The rise is attributed to Luxembourg’s stability, opportunities for higher education, business prospects, and improved connectivity.
Breakdown by Visa Purpose
Among the total applications filed in 2024:
- 9,009 were for family reunification, making it the most common reason for visa applications.
- 8,038 were for tourism, a notable jump from previous years, showing Luxembourg’s emergence as a travel destination.
- 5,600 were submitted for business purposes.
- 4,624 were for long-stay visas, often related to employment or academic opportunities.
These figures suggest a diversification in visa demand, with rising interest across multiple sectors.
Indian and Turkish Nationals Lead in Visa Issuance
Indian nationals once again topped the list of foreign nationals receiving visas from Luxembourg:
- 5,495 Schengen visas were issued to Indian passport holders in 2024.
- Turkish citizens followed with 3,373 visas granted.
- Chinese nationals received 3,216 visas, while Moroccan and Russian citizens were granted 1,905 and 1,378 visas, respectively.
These five countries represent the largest non-EU applicant groups for Luxembourg in 2024.
Top Consulates by Application Volume
Luxembourg’s busiest visa-processing locations in 2024 were:
- New Delhi: 4,058 applications
- Ankara: 3,299 applications
- Beijing: 1,951 applications
The rise in Chinese applications is attributed to the launch of direct flights between China and Luxembourg, along with enhanced cooperation with external visa service providers.
