Visa Issues Impact Turkish Truck Drivers and EU Trade Relations, UND Warns
Şerafettin Aras, President of the International Transporters Association (UND), has expressed concerns about the significant impact of Schengen visa restrictions on Turkish truck drivers. Speaking to Trans Info, Aras emphasized that delays and denials are disrupting logistics, increasing costs, and straining trade relationships with the European Union (EU).
Aras highlighted that truck drivers are essential for Türkiye’s export operations, particularly to the EU, which represents a large share of goods transported to Europe. He noted that EU-based companies in Türkiye manage around 50% of these exports, with Germany accounting for 30% and Italy for 10%. He stressed that visa requirements not only burden Turkish hauliers but also penalize the EU by complicating its supply chain.
Proposed Solutions to the Visa Crisis
The UND has called for practical measures to alleviate the challenges, including:
- Prioritizing drivers in visa processing.
- Issuing multi-entry visas for drivers.
- Simplifying the application process.
- Streamlining visa processing for transport operators.
Bilateral Trade and Visa Challenges
Citing trade data, Aras noted that Türkiye exported €95.5 billion worth of goods to the EU and imported €111.3 billion from the bloc, as per Eurostat. Similarly, Türkiye’s Ministry of Trade reported €98.04 billion in exports to the EU and €99.64 billion in imports from the bloc in 2023. He underlined that visa barriers harm both Türkiye and the EU by disrupting this substantial trade relationship.
The UND has reiterated its call for the EU to establish a visa-free travel framework for Turkish nationals, a longstanding request supported by the significant number of Schengen visa applications from Türkiye—1,055,885 in 2023 alone.
