Hungarian Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky has reaffirmed Hungary's commitment to Serbia’s European Union membership, emphasizing that Serbia deserves to join the EU after years of waiting. His comments were made during a joint press conference with Serbian Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic.
Hungary’s Commitment as EU Council President
Since assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU on July 1, 2024, Hungary has consistently supported Serbia’s EU accession, reflecting its strong ties with Serbia. Hungarians make up the largest minority group in Serbia, with 184,442 Hungarians residing there, according to the 2022 census.
High-Level Meetings Reinforce Support
- In October 2024, Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, expressing unwavering support for Serbia’s EU membership.
- Discussions focused on energy and infrastructure cooperation and the need to fulfill the EU’s two-decade-old promise to the Western Balkans.
