Iranian Scholars Protest Visa Delays Outside Irish Embassy in Tehran

A group of 16 Iranian scholars and researchers have staged a protest outside the Irish Embassy in Tehran, expressing deep frustration over year-long delays in receiving decisions on their Irish visa applications. Many of them have been left in limbo for over a year, despite holding prestigious academic offers in Ireland.

Petition Filed Amid Prolonged Delays

Before organizing the protest, the scholars launched a petition urging Irish authorities to accelerate the visa processing timeline. They emphasized that the prolonged delays are not only jeopardizing their academic careers but also taking a severe toll on their mental health and well-being.

Visa Uncertainty Linked to Health and Career Setbacks

One scholar, who wished to remain anonymous, shared that they were awarded a fully funded PhD position in Ireland, calling it a "dream come true." However, the ongoing visa delays have placed this opportunity at serious risk. The individual described experiencing emotional and physical health issues during this extended period of uncertainty, stating it had left them feeling "powerless."

Another academic, a former Marie Curie scholar, revealed that they had to relinquish their position in Ireland due to the visa situation. Despite receiving offers from other countries, the scholar remained committed to Ireland, believing it to be the best fit. That decision, however, came at a high cost—both professionally and personally—resulting in depression and declining health.

The same scholar has since accepted an academic role in another country, but the experience has been disheartening. They expressed that the administrative hurdles and prolonged visa delays have discouraged them from pursuing any future academic opportunities in Ireland.
