Sweden Simplifies EU Blue Card Rules to Attract Foreign Talent

Sweden’s Riksdag, the parliament and supreme decision-making body, has approved the implementation of the EU’s new Blue Card Directive into Swedish law. The changes, effective January 1, 2025, aim to attract and retain more highly qualified professionals from non-EU countries.

Key Changes to Sweden’s EU Blue Card

1. Lowered Salary Threshold

   • The eligibility salary threshold will decrease from 1.5 times to 1.25 times the average gross annual salary in Sweden.

2. Increased Flexibility for Workers

   • Highly qualified workers can switch to another highly qualified job without reapplying for a new EU Blue Card. They only need to notify the Migration Agency.

3. Shorter Employment Contract Requirement

   • The required employment contract duration is reduced from one year to six months.

4. Simplified Transition from Other Residence Permits

   • Eligible applicants can switch from other types of residence permits to an EU Blue Card without leaving Sweden.

5. Simplified Procedures for Card Holders from Other EU States

   • Highly qualified workers holding an EU Blue Card from another member state for 12 months can now apply for a Swedish EU Blue Card under a streamlined process.

Faster Application Processing

Swedish authorities have also shortened the processing time for EU Blue Card applications from 90 days to 30 days, making Sweden more accessible to foreign professionals.
