Swedish Migration Board Criticized Over Prolonged Citizenship Processing Times
The Swedish Migration Board is facing growing criticism for excessive delays in processing citizenship applications. A recent report reveals that in 2023, the board issued around 75,000 decisions related to citizenship cases, with 58,000 being new applications. Citizenship matters now constitute the largest category of cases handled by the board.
According to Sweden’s National Audit Office, the Migration Board’s approach to handling citizenship applications is inefficient. Many applicants have reportedly waited over four years for a decision, leading to serious consequences—such as missed job opportunities, inability to vote, or delays in accessing education.
High Volume of Applications Causing Delays, Says Migration Board
In response to the criticism, the Director General of the Swedish Migration Board, Maria Mindhammar, acknowledged the backlog and attributed the delays to a surge in applications—particularly from individuals who arrived in Sweden during the 2015 refugee crisis and are now eligible to apply for citizenship. She stated that the agency is taking the criticism seriously and is working on addressing the issues.
Over 62,000 Citizenship Applications Filed in 2024
Data from Sweden’s Statistical Database (SCB) shows that 62,989 people applied for Swedish citizenship in 2024, with 16,291 applications submitted in the fourth quarter alone. Afghan nationals accounted for the highest number of applicants, with over 5,000 submissions.
Tighter Citizenship Rules Proposed Amid National Security Concerns
The Swedish government has also proposed stricter rules for acquiring citizenship. Under the new plans, individuals who pose a threat to national security will be barred from becoming Swedish citizens. This move comes in response to recent terrorist attacks and broader security concerns linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine and other geopolitical tensions.
