UK Businesses Strongly Back EU-UK Youth Mobility Visa Proposal
UK Businesses Strongly Back EU-UK Youth Mobility Scheme as Talks Continue
Over 70 Labour MPs, along with various business leaders and policy advocates, are voicing support for the EU-UK Youth Mobility Scheme, which aims to re-establish freedom of movement for young people between the United Kingdom and the European Union. The proposed agreement would allow individuals aged 18 to 30 to live, work, and study in each other's territories, similar to arrangements the UK already has with Australia, New Zealand, and Uruguay.
“With youth mobility agreements already in place with countries including Australia, New Zealand, and Uruguay, striking a similar deal with our largest trading partner should be a no-brainer.”
— Mark Hilton, Policy Delivery Director, BusinessLDN
Hilton emphasized that enhanced mobility would boost the economy and foster cultural and educational exchange, benefiting both the UK and the EU.
Government Shows Caution Despite Broad Support
While many view the scheme as a positive post-Brexit development, the UK government remains cautious about fully committing.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson acknowledged that existing limitations on freedom of movement may lead to the scheme being time-bound or subject to restrictions.
“Discussions are under way on a number of topics. I’m afraid I can’t talk about specifics—there is a negotiation, and it wouldn’t be right to do so.”
— Bridget Phillipson, Education Secretary
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is actively working to strengthen UK-EU relations, hosting EU leaders at a London summit. Analysts suggest that Brexit has cost the UK billions, and restoring cooperation could yield significant economic benefits.
According to the Centre for European Reform, resetting ties with the EU could boost UK GDP by 0.3% to 0.7%, a much-needed lift for a struggling economy.
EU to Recognise UK Qualifications to Ease Cross-Border Employment
In a move to further rebuild ties, the European Union is considering recognising UK professional qualifications, a step that would make it easier for British professionals to work in the EU.
According to the Financial Times, this initiative is part of a forthcoming EU single market strategy, due to be published ahead of a May 19 summit. The aim is to reduce friction in labour mobility and restore confidence in UK-EU cooperation post-Brexit.
A report from the London Assembly notes that since Brexit, London’s economy has lost approximately €35 million, and about 290,000 jobs have been impacted, reinforcing the urgency of restoring seamless mobility.
