General Information

Denmark has a long history and has been autonomous for 11 centuries. It has succeeded in establishing a contemporary, vibrant democracy on its soil over this whole period.

In the Kingdom, socialism is thriving. The nation provides for its residents in every manner imaginable, including via healthcare, education, and social security. The state's two primary industries are manufacturing and agriculture. The areas of trade, transportation, and services are likewise well-advanced.

There are 5.5 million people in Denmark. It has a uniform ethnic and cultural makeup. Before a substantial influx of immigrants, the Kingdom of Denmark opened its gates and extended a warm invitation. Twenty-eight thousand seven hundred eighty persons, including Poles, Romanians, Bulgarians, Ukrainians, and residents of the Baltic states, entered Denmark in 2018 alone. The prospective intern must decide what kind of farms he wants to intern in. Most farms are diversified, with one area of animal husbandry integrated with growing grains and industrial crops. Interns' tasks in animal husbandry include caring for animals (cows). A portion of the job is sometimes done in the fields using machines. All contracts have an 18-month term of validity.

English / Danish is the default language for all of our internship programs.

EU citizens:

If you are an EU citizen, you will not need to be granted a residence permit as an intern before coming to Denmark. The work must be part of an educational programme you have begun in your country. The internship must be related to your ongoing education in your country. You can work in Denmark as an intern for a limited period.

Non-EU citizens:

If you are not an EU citizen, you must be granted a work and residence permit as an intern before coming to Denmark. You can be given a residence and work permit if you wish to work in Denmark as an intern for a limited period. The work must be part of an educational programme you have begun in your country. The internship must be related to your ongoing education in your country.

 Student Eligibility

A student is eligible to participate in the Internship Program if they meet the following criteria:

English proficiency: Internships in Denmark require a high level of English 

proficiency. You’ll be expected to communicate with colleagues effectively.

Age: Between age 18 and 28, single and have a strong interest in farming, an excellent attitude, and outstanding work ethic. Open-minded to new cultures and enthusiastic and willing to learn is a must.

Student status: Be a full-time active student enrolled in an accredited public StateAgricultural University or Agricultural College and have completed at least one academic year and have one academic year left before graduating in one of the following: 

1. Agriculture animal husbandry & production (cow and swine production animal breeding management) 
2. agronomy 
3. veterinary 
4. equine 
5. horticulture 
6. forestry

You will still need to be enrolled as a student during the internship.

Verifiable English language skills and a good understanding of English.

International certifications must attest to knowledge of languages. IELTStest: Min. 5.5 (overall score) or Cambridge test: Min. B1. 

Previous farming experience is preferred, but if you don´t have any, we recommend you work on a farm in your home country for at least three months. (Students from an agricultural background are strongly encouraged to apply.)

Have the maturity to live in a foreign country, away from your family and friends, and you can adapt to a different lifestyle and live with people with different beliefs and values.

Valid international driving license for car (type B).

Valid passport. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

Sufficient funds to pay the internship abroad costs

able to commit to the entire duration of your program placement (up to 18 months).

Good health and physically fit.

Have no personal or legal problems.

And a sense of humour….it goes a long way!

Please make sure to assume that great experiences will come to you

quickly. You have to engage fully, be willing to learn and try new things, and you will have to work hard and deal with many new and challenging circumstances, especially at the beginning. Be prepared for it. That is all part of the adventure.

To be eligible, you must answer “Yes” to all questions. If you answer “No” to one or more of the above question(s), you should consider postponing your application until the above requirements are met.

Please remember that even if you meet the above qualifications, an internship is not guaranteed. Every employer has their own eligibility and selection criteria. Sometimes, a background check may be required for the recruitment process…

Sometimes, we do not process internship applications because AtoZ Serwis Plus has no representatives in the applicant’s home country who can help and guide you with the application process and help ensure that you have all the in-country support required to help you make a successful application.

• Please remember that an internship is not guaranteed even if you meet the abovementioned requirements. Each business has its requirements for qualifying and selection. A background check may sometimes be necessary throughout the hiring process.

Visa Application 

Denmark invites students from higher education institutions in agriculture, hospitality, and food technology for on-the-job training in various industries. Danish farms and facilities lead the world in adopting novel technology, environmentally friendly manufacturing practises, humane livestock management practises, production processes, and output realisation. Denmark has some of the world's highest quality and most environmentally friendly food items.

Registration in Denmark

You must obtain work permission from your embassy if you plan to attend Denmark for your traineeship. AtoZ Serwis Plus Partner is available to help you out if you like. Upon arriving in Denmark, the first step you should take is to apply for a CPR number.

CPR Number

• Work permission and COPY
• Employment contract and COPY
• Registration certificate (EU residence document)
• Original passport/ID card and its COPY
• Proof of your address in Denmark and its COPY
• Original marriage certificate and its COPY if you are married (even when your partner is not coming to Denmark with you)
• Divorce/death certificate if you are a widow (er)

Choose a doctor

Once you have received your CPR number, selecting a doctor is essential. You'll then be issued a yellow health insurance card that displays your CPR number and doctor's name. The yellow card will be sent to your address in Denmark, so please ensure your name is clearly stated on the mailbox. Additionally, all certificates must be provided in English, German, or a Scandinavian language.

NEM ID

It is a digital signature, a standard log-in solution for Danish Internet banking, government websites and other private companies. You will get your NEM ID, CPR number, card, and logins and passwords. (You must take care of this card and not lose it.)

Bank account

You are ready to open your bank account when registered in Denmark (received your yellow card). To open a Danish bank account, you must bring these documents.

Identity papers with photo (ID/passport/driving license)
• Documentation of your address in Denmark (CPR, NEM ID, registration paper)
• Work Contract: You can get more information from individual banks.

When you get your bank account, please send all the information to your employer so he can send you your salary.Good banks can be Danske Bank, Jyske, Nordea.

Residence Card (Pink Card)

When you apply for CPR, you are providing the SIRI office with your accommodation address, and you will automatically get in 2 weeks the residence card (pink card) at your address. If you don’t get your residence card after eight weeks, you have to call the SIRI office: +45 71 14 20 03

Tax system

The society in Denmark is formed as a welfare state, meaning everyone living here must contribute to the community for that period.
For example, as health care is free of charge for all trainees in Germany, Norway and Denmark, it is a part of your taxes that you pay to society.

Danish Tax system

In Denmark, taxes are calculated on a private base for each individual. Meaning it's different from the same % tax that I pay, as my coworkers pay. There are some deductions, and the % of tax will always depend on how much you earn before taxes.

In total, you, as a trainee, must pay these kinds of taxes:

Danish income tax includes municipal tax, health system contribution (sundhedsbidrag), AM-bidrag and state tax.

Arbejdmarkedsbidrag (AM-bidrag) – labour market contribution

In addition to municipal taxes, all employees in Denmark also pay a labour market contribution (AM-bidrag) of 8 %. This is a tax, which, among other things, covers in the event of unemployment and sickness benefits and expenditure for training and activation. The labour market contribution is deducted from your entire gross earnings. Income tax is then removed.

Municipal tax and sundhedsbidrag

Municipal tax makes up the most significant portion of the total income tax, 24 %(2019) for commuters living in Denmark

State tax in Denmark

State tax increases in line with income. In 2020, the following applied:

• Bottom tax: For amounts above the basic deduction of DKK 46.500, you pay 12.14 %in tax
• Top tax: For amounts above DKK 531.000 (after AM-bidrag), you pay 15 % in tax

Managing your tax in TastSelv

In Denmark, Skattestyrelsen has a system called TastSelv. You can find more information on Skattestyrelsen's website. In TastSelv, you can change the information if your income changes during the year, among other things. You need a NemID or a TastSelv code to access your tax information. So that you know, the TastSelv code is only valid until the 1st of January 2020 and will then be removed as an option for logging in.

Working Conditions

In Denmark, a working week is 37 hours, accumulated into 160.2 hours a month. A working day lasts approximately 8 hours – excluding self-paid breaks. You earn the right to 5 weeks of vacation money per year. They can be used in two ways:

1. You can have a holiday and travel but still get paid, even though you don’t work. This must be arranged with the host family in advance. 
2. The other way is to get the money transferred to your bank account each month. You earn 2,08 days of vacation every month when working full time, where there is money attached to these days. You have to apply for this online yourself from the government.

Life in Denmark

When you will arrive to Denmark, the host-family will meet you at the airport and drive you to the house/apartment and will help you to accommodate there. The accommodation price is 200-250€ per month

When you are coming to Denmark for longer period of time, it is always a good idea to get a Danish number – of course if operator from your country is not offering something better. The cheapest option is Lebara operator.

Transportation

Shopping

The five discount supermarkets that you want to look for are Netto, Fakta, Aldi, Lidl and Rema 1000. Netto and Fakta are Danish, Rema1000 is Norwegian and the rest are German. Nevertheless, those five supermarkets are the best choice for daily shopping as well as for their special offers (always look for a sign Tilbud – discount). Every week you can find different special offers in each shop.
