Czechia Plans Higher Work Visa Quota to Attract Skilled Labor Force
Czechia to Prioritize Highly Skilled Workers in Immigration Overhaul
Czechia is set to implement key reforms to its immigration system aimed at attracting highly qualified professionals, particularly in sectors facing significant labor shortages. The country is placing a strategic focus on welcoming IT specialists, scientists, and other skilled experts while reducing opportunities for low-skilled workers.
Targeted Nationalities & IT Sector Boost
Among those expected to benefit from the upcoming changes are nationals of India, China, and Thailand. According to Expats.cz, the Czech Embassy in India will introduce 24 new application slots specifically for IT professionals under the digital nomad visa program. This visa allows eligible applicants to reside and work in Czechia as self-employed individuals. Authorities have also confirmed that applications under this program will be processed within 45 days.
Increased Quotas for Chinese and Thai Workers
In response to growing interest, Czechia will expand its annual work visa quota for Chinese nationals to 1,170. These additional slots will primarily be allocated to qualified professionals. Similarly, the Czech Embassy in Bangkok will increase the work visa quota for Thai nationals from the current 300 to 460 annually.
Reduction in Quotas for Low-Skilled Applicants from Some African Nations
As part of efforts to streamline the labor market and prioritize skilled migration, Czech authorities plan to cut work visa quotas for low-skilled applicants from certain African countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia, and Zambia. However, quotas for highly qualified workers from these countries will remain unchanged.
New Exemptions for Taiwanese Nationals
In a separate move to support the integration of skilled workers, Czechia announced earlier this year that nationals of Taiwan will no longer be required to obtain a work permit or employment card to work in the country. Once this new rule comes into force, Taiwanese citizens will be allowed to enter Czechia for employment purposes without needing prior labor authorization.
According to data from the Ministry of Labour, 185 Taiwanese nationals (80 men and 105 women) were employed in Czechia last year, and the government aims to further enhance these numbers through the exemption policy.
