Austria
Applying for a Austria student visa? Here’s help!
The Austria Government provides an opportunity to all EU/EEA students to study in the country but as a prerequisite, you’ll have to obtain a student visa first.
The visa you need will depend on your age and the type of study you wish to pursue in the Austria. Here’s an overview* of the types of study visas and their application requirements:
EU/EEA & Swiss Students
- No visa required for entry
- If your stay will exceed a 3 month period you are required to submit a confirmation of registration (Anmeldebescheinigung), where you will have to show proof of health insurance.
- You are eligible to receive state-provided health care if you hold an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
Regardless of if you plan to stay in Austria up to 3 months or more it is important to have an EHIC card. Each country has its distinct application process to receive this card so be sure to look into this with plenty of time before your departure. This is a free card which allows EU/EEA and Swiss Nationals to have temporary state-provided medical coverage in qualifying countries. As an owner of this card Austria insurance for international students is simplified due to the fact that you are not only satisfying the insurance requirements for Austria, but also ensuring that you will receive medical care as if you were an Austrian citizen. Keep in mind, however, that the costs of medical services may still differ your home country so be sure to make it a priority to go to medical centers that are under Austria’s regional health insurance offices (Gebietskrankenkasse) where most services are free.
Non-EU Students (from exempt countries) - 3 month period or less
- No visa
- Required to have private or travel insurance
The following chart provides a list of countries that are exempt from applying for a visa if traveling to Austria for a 3 month period or less.
