Austria Awards Citizenship to 5,000+ Individuals in 2025
Austria Grants Citizenship to 5,479 People in Q1 2025, with Sharp Rise Among Descendants of Nazi Victims
Austria granted citizenship to 5,479 individuals in the first quarter of 2025, reflecting a growing interest in naturalisation compared to the previous year. Notably, 2,188 of these new citizens reside abroad, accounting for 40% of the total.
Nazi Persecution Descendants Drive Increase
According to Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria, the rise in foreign-based applicants is largely due to an increase in naturalisations of people persecuted by the Nazi regime and their descendants—a group allowed to obtain Austrian citizenship since September 2020 without having to renounce other citizenships.
In Q1 2025, 2,176 people in this category gained Austrian citizenship, but only three of them reside in Austria. This marks a 6.8% increase compared to the 2,037 naturalised in Q1 2024.
