Germany's Border Control Plans Draw Criticism from Austria and Luxembourg
Germany’s New Border Control Plans Spark Tensions with Luxembourg, Gain Support from Austria
With the swearing-in of Germany’s new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, on May 6, one of the first major initiatives announced by his administration involves tightening border checks as part of broader efforts to address irregular migration. The move has triggered mixed reactions from neighbouring countries, notably Luxembourg and Austria.
Luxembourg Criticises German Border Strategy
Luxembourg’s Interior Minister, Léon Gloden, has voiced strong criticism against Germany’s push for stricter border controls, warning that such policies risk reintroducing mental borders within the Schengen Area and disrupting cross-border mobility.
Gloden emphasized the importance of unrestricted travel between EU member states and labelled Germany’s border checks as “ineffective and harmful,” describing them as symbolic gestures rather than impactful policy.
Almost half of Luxembourg’s population consists of foreign nationals, primarily from other EU countries. In 2019, over 200,000 people commuted daily to Luxembourg from neighbouring Belgium, France, and Germany. These commuters are expected to be disproportionately affected by increased border delays and disruptions.
In response, Luxembourg has already filed a formal complaint with the European Commission. Additionally, the country’s largest opposition party, LSAP, is pressuring the government to take legal action against Germany at the European Court of Justice for violating EU principles on free movement.
Austria Backs Germany’s Tougher Border Policy
In contrast, Austria has expressed full support for Germany’s new border and asylum measures. Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker congratulated Chancellor Merz on his election and expressed interest in close collaboration on migration and security.
Germany’s policy aims to curb irregular migration while complying with EU law, and may involve refusing entry to asylum seekers who enter from another EU country. The extension of such measures could particularly impact those seeking international protection at the German border.
